Pregnancy

It is important to start taking folic acid right away, if you're not taking it already. Folic acid is a vitamine that reduces the chance of certain deviations for the baby, e.g. spina bifida (cleft spine). You can buy folic acid in tablets (0,4 or 0,5 mg) at the drugstore or pharmacy. Take one tablet a day until the end of week 13 in your pregnancy.
Also advised to pregnant women is a daily intake of 10 micrograms vitamin D. This vitamine is important for the bone development of the baby. This daily intake is for the whole of the pregancy and the period you are breastfeeding the baby. Vitamine D can be bought at the drugstore or pharmacy.

When making the first appointment, every pregnant woman (and their partner) will also get an appointment for early groupeducation. At this meeting you will receive important information about nutrition, lifestyle, pregnancy symptoms, courses, Maternity assistance, recognition, maternity leave and much more. The education lasts 1.5 hours and takes place at several locations and times.

The first appointment at our practice takes place around 8 weeks gestation and takes about 45-60 minutes. We will then inform to your health, any previous pregnancies and births and regulate a blood test at the laboratory where the blood is tested for blood group, Rhesus factor, irregular antibodies, iron deficiency, sugar and some infections (rubella, HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis). We will then also inform you about the possibility of prenatal testing on request. For further information: prenatal testing.

You will receive a referral for an ultrasound. This can best made around 12 weeks gestation. Furthermore, we measure your blood pressure and determine your weight. Blood pressure control will be taken every time you have an appointment at our practice. Of course there always will be room for questions. Your partner, family and friends are very welcome. We will also tell you how to arrange maternity assistance. Everyone in the Netherlands is obliged to register at a maternity assistance company. For more information see: delivery.

The second appointment will take place around 16 weeks. From that moment on we will listen to the heart of the baby every time. This is possible from about 11 weeks gestation. This appointment takes 30 minutes. We will discuss the blood results and the echo and inform you about the possibility of the 20-week ultrasound.

The appointments after this will take about 15 minutes. In total you will get about 10 appointments with us during your pregnancy. At 30 weeks we will determine the amount of iron in your blood at the practice. If you are rhesus negative, blood will also be taken during this inspection and you will furthermore get an injection of antibodies.

At 32 weeks we will discuss your wishes and ideas concerning your birth. At 36 weeks we will provide you extensive information about the delivery. What can you expect? When should you contact us? What is normal and what is not? For information on the delivery, see: delivery.
